Jakarta – CNEWS – A Chinese national, Mr. Dong Dayong, was found deceased in his apartment on the 10th floor of Menteng Executive Apartment, Central Jakarta, on Sunday, December 15, 2024. Dayong, an employee of nickel company PT Virtual Dragon Nickel Industry (VDNI), headquartered in the Autograph Building near Bundaran Hotel Indonesia, had been working in Morosi, Southeast Sulawesi.
The news shocked Dayong’s family, particularly his sister, Ms. Shi Jing, who arrived in Jakarta the day after his death. "On December 14, I spoke with him over the phone, and he assured me that his health was improving despite a recent hospital visit. The next day, his phone went unanswered," Shi Jing tearfully told Wilson Lalengke, Chairman of the Indonesian Citizen Journalists Association (PPWI), on Tuesday, December 24, 2024.
The circumstances surrounding Dayong’s death remain unclear, as the police investigation is ongoing. His apartment is still sealed off, and Shi Jing has not been able to retrieve her brother’s personal belongings. Meanwhile, his body remains in a hospital morgue awaiting further instructions.
Family Demands Compensation
Shi Jing expressed concerns about the cremation process and the family's right to compensation. "Dayong worked tirelessly for PT VDNI, and we expect the company to take responsibility by providing proper compensation. He supported our elderly mother, and his passing has left us devastated, both emotionally and financially," she said.
The family hopes the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta will assist in ensuring that Dayong's rights, including compensation for his work, are honored. "I will not leave Indonesia until the cremation process is completed, and the matter of compensation is resolved," Shi Jing stated.
Calls for Employer Accountability
Shi Jing’s appeal has highlighted concerns about how companies treat foreign workers in unfortunate circumstances. Many believe that employers should provide comprehensive support, including financial assistance, to the families of deceased employees.
The case has also drawn attention to the working conditions of foreign nationals employed in Indonesia's nickel industry. Advocates stress the importance of accountability and corporate responsibility in handling such incidents.
For now, the family, supported by the Chinese community and local advocates, awaits a resolution. Both the Indonesian authorities and PT VDNI are urged to act swiftly to bring closure to this tragic case.
